My apologies for being ignorant to the context, I'm just passing through and happen to have a "coloring opinion" on this:
The character's facial featured seem coded to be somewhat simple/boring and judging from him carrying his own firewood over a long distance he does not seem to be wealthy. As those are probably his everyday-/work-clothes the gray variant appears the most fitting to me.
Unless of course, I got his character wrong and he is 'secretly fancy' or supposed to stand out very strongly in 'every single scene'. Like the man in the white uniform (very likely Bismarck) in 'this' painting:

Number 3 or Number 5 for me. The colors blend with the background and seem like a contrast to the whole design.
